Cretian Times The Last Issue

09:30 - check-in excellent. No weighing scales so no possibility of excess baggage. Seats allocated at 12e+f. Go to breakfast and then sit in the cool until pick up at 12:30. I am sure I will find something to write about or photograph.

13:00 I have to say that Heraklion airport is not a good experience. Far too small for the number of flights coming in and a ridiculous gate system. At least we didn't have to check our cases in.

So here we go, only 30 mins to lift off and our journey home. Nice to see it is the same 25 year old plane that we flew here on. Wonder if they still have the gaffer tape holding the internal door trims on!

Gaffer tape gone but interesting crack in the window frame just by my seat. I will keep my eye on it and hope it doesn't grow during the flight.

Mrs CT eventually gets through passport control after getting in the wrong queue stuck behind a couple of dimwits. Uneventful flight apart from a couple of badly behaved children or should I say a couple of kids with incapable/uninterested parents.

Any way a fabulous 2 weeks in the sun. Fully rested and now ready to tackle whatever the rest of the year has to throw at us.

Bye for now S & S

Cretian Times Day 14

Our last full day in the sun. Having said that there is a bit of cloud this morning giving some welcome shade at times. What is also apparent is that half of the hotel went home yesterday taking all their little darlings of school age with them. (Before anyone questions as to why we are taking our holiday during term time I should explain that we have to be back in the UK this week for the wedding of our good friends Ju & Sean).

Went for a walk up into the nearby village where I spotted this latest in family transport, a Cutivator 1.1d Convertible. Nice!

Fruit in various forms also on show.

The last one is pomegranate for those that cannot spot the fruit.

19:00 - left Mrs CT in the room to finish off the packing. I find it best to keep out of the way during this mystical process. So naturally I am where I have been for the past 14 evenings at this time.

One of the best extra features that you get from our hotel is that the airport check-in comes to you! Each morning a team arrives from the airport with weighing scales and boarding cards and checks you in to your flight. Bags are then whisked away, the next time to be seen at Stansted. Absolutely no queuing at the small shed known as Heraklion airport. Game on!

As it is my last night I am allowing myself a small treat - paprika crisps - the first contraband in nearly 2 months (see comments re Dukan diet from a couple of days ago).

Now there's just one small hurdle to overcome in the next 24 hours. Will I be allowed down the local to watch the England game 30 minutes after getting home? What do you reckon? Don't all shout at me at once!

Time for another I feel

Cretian Times Day 13

Another sportsman in the hotel - Raymond van Barneveld - darts for those of you non the wiser. Click his name to learn more.

Oh dear, not happy. It would appear that the Sky Sports 3 feed in Crete is not the same as the UK. They are showing motorsport when of course they should be showing Saints v Tigers. I have even got all dressed up for the occasion. Lucky I have TuneIn Radio app on the iPhone so at least I can listen to 5 Live.

Sh*t that weight gain over the last fortnight is not looking good!

What a great start for the Saints. Two tries in 5 minutes for Tiny. Get in!

18:50 - a little happier now. A good start to the season for Saints. A 27-19 win over the Tigers. Should have got the bonus point though.

Tex-Mex tonight. Looking forward to a bit of heat from the chillies. I have eaten way too much this holiday even after avoiding all the carbs. Don't think I will achieve that tonight as everything comes wrapped in a tortilla. The only difference in the dishes is how they fold it.

Continuing with the theme of my favourite past photos, here is one from a couple of years ago. I think I will call it
Man teaches glass table a lesson
Enjoy!

Nice one Mr B.

Cretian Times Day 12

A little late tonight due to a great game of rugby S.Africa v Australia. Watching in Pat's bar with a guy from Jo'burg.

Last week I think I made mention of a pesky Frenchman by the name of Dr. Pierre Dukan. This man has become the focus of my culinary efforts for the past 7 weeks. It started as all these things do with Mrs CT announcing one weekend that we were both going on a diet from Monday. Not the first time this has happened. What I do not know about the Weightwatchers point system and Red & Green days is not worth knowing. The Dukan diet concentrates on wiping out the consumption of carbs and then reintroducing them gradually 3 months later. This has caused major temptation this holiday but I am pleased to say that all chips, bread, pasta and rice have in the main been avoided. I wish I could say the same for all the wine & beer and 3 solid meals a day. I have therefore forfeited 4kgs of the 10 that I had lost pre holiday. Back on track next week. If you want to know more click his name above.

Not much to write today due to total inactivity. I do want to discuss however the use of the english language by the likes of estate agents and now travel firms. This next picture was taken a few years ago when we were holidaying in Zante. Please consider the use of the word "may" in the following brochure description. this hotel MAY experience some aircraft noise!

Who are you trying to kid. In the end we turned it into a lottery type drinking game along the lines of - if the next plane in is from the UK we can have a pint. This worked well with flights every 30 mins or so from all over Europe. Until Wednesdays that is which turned out to be UK day. 11 pints by 14:00 is not good!

A few random pics to finish

A certain person queuing at the restaurant booking machines. You can spot the gained 4kgs quite easily.

Do not forget tomorrow 15:00 Sky Sports 3 the main event of the week.

Cretian Times Day 11

Remember when you were young, painting multiple colours on a piece of paper and then covering the whole lot with a black wax crayon. You could then scratch off the wax to create a picture revealing the colours underneath? Kids of today I think use "magic pens". Well something similar has arrived for the iPhone - Colorsplash. You take one of your photographs which the program turns black & white. You can then remove some of this grey covering to reveal just the coloured parts you want to. This gives focus to the subject matter such as this picture which I am calling mmmmm beer!

Some other examples of our holiday

What a great little program. (available from the App store as usual).

Some nice sand art on the beach this morning

This is Mrs CT's effort. How touching!

Did you manage to find the nice pair of melons in yesterdays photo? No? Well here they are

Cretian Times Day 10

Yesterday I took the male of the species to task re their choice of swimwear, I feel I need to bring things into balance. Today my subject is Tramp Stamps or more specifically those broad tattoos stretching across the lower back of ladies who choose to do so. Unlike the men and their Speedos whose choice of affliction befalls them in later life, the choice for the lady is usually made at a much younger age. The horror for both comes at the same time. Having watched pool life in general over the past 10 days it is obvious that some of these tramp stamps are now well over 20 years old and unfortunately for the wearer, nature has taken it's toll. The once proud decoration has started to head south. This is why I prefer the German name for these adornments which translates as "Ass Horns". So, ladies if you are in your late teens / early twenties, think not "how cool will that look" but what will it look like in 25 years time after 2 kids and middle age beckons? In the most cases not good! (PS the young lady is not in our hotel and I did not take the picture).

After last week's walk in the heat, we today took the train into Hersonissos. Well when I say train I mean a heavily disguised tractor pulling 3 trailers fitted out with bench seating. On the whole a pleasant experience taking in parts of the old town as well as the olive groves on the outskirts. Why our Greek hosts thought they were operating some sort of fairground ride in the first 10 minutes is beyond me. Driving around in a tight circle could be vomit inducing and then driving side to side causing the rear trailers to veer snakelike and at whiplash speed certainly was. And to cap it all they then stopped and insisted on taking photographs of the now terrified passengers which could be viewed later with no obligation to buy. Too bloody right mate!

Lastly today is a picture of a nice pair of melons. Can you spot them?

Cretian Times Day 9

At what point in his life does a man think "I bet if I wore a pair of small swimming trunks from Speedo, I will look really cool"? Middle aged and older men seem to have a fascination with this that surely has to come with a slow down in the cerebral cortex. This affliction is even more so prevalent in the males from mainland Europe. Walking past several of the large Germanic hotels this morning, Mrs CT was prone to numerous bouts of the giggles. Guys - once you get to an age and body shape that needs some decency, put the thongs away - please.

This is my T-shirt for the day.

I do have another one with a large male chicken on it. You can work out the motto for yourselves!

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. Here in Crete it falls in our pool.

Don't worry it was just a passing shower and we were inside getting changed for the evening. Nice rainbows.

I think the seats at Pat's bar could be a bit soggy.
